Linnea Beach was a rustic resort on Wilkins Lake that was owned by Great Aunt Ida and her sister, Matilda. Matilda died in the early 1940s. Ida ran the resort by herself with the help of a caretaker. She was in her eighties when she sold the resort. Without the resort to keep her busy, her health faded rapidly.
The resort consisted of 5 log cabins, a ‘White House’ for the caretaker, Pine Haven, used as a hunter’s shack, and a lodge. The lodge consisted of a play area for kids, an office, and a residence where Ida lived.
The resort had no running water. There was one hand-operated pump for the entire resort. Its boats were flat bottom. Rental rates were $25-$35 per week.
Raising the Flag
Aunt Ida cherished education and respected the flag.
Ida was a school teacher and a principal, She would always salute any school she saw when driving. She would expect her passengers to also salute.
Ida always flew the flag. Putting it up and taking it down each day. She would follow the correct protocols when retiring a flag after it had become worn and tattered.
In the video, Ida and Bob go through the daily flag raising ceremony.
